Without alcohol, you might find a new appreciation for the activities you do, noticing details and experiencing moments more fully. Sober activities can also lead to new interests and hobbies, contributing to personal growth. Sober fun doesn’t mean opting out of social life — it means tuning into it more fully. Coffee meetups, movie nights, fitness classes, or travel without the haze of alcohol are just a few ways people enjoy sober activities. But in sobriety, it was a source of joy.

Start building healthier drinking habits today.

Having fun without alcohol sometimes means leaving behind bad habits, unhelpful friendships or locations which are doing you no good. You don’t have to do the same as everyone else so decide to spend your time elsewhere or doing different things can make a big difference in reducing alcohol cravings. Tonight, after work to kick off the weekend, I bought a longboard, picked up some pizza, and watched a YouTube video a friend recommended.

New sobriety doesn’t always feel fun.

  • If you want to try a new game, there are tons of board game review channels on YouTube, and sites dedicated to rating games.
  • Or, make something new by picking up a stress-relieving fiber-based art — whether that’s sewing your own clothes, crocheting, embroidery or otherwise.
  • We want to isolate and sit with our feelings.
  • If you must dig WAY back into childhood for this answer, then do that.

I joined a running club, and I did my first 10 K in 5 years. And I know I never would have done that. That was something that wasn’t on my radar. When I was drinking every night and every activity centered around happy hour. I also got to listen to great music when I was jogging music that I drug addiction hadn’t heard in years, I listened to songs from college and from high school.

Don’t get down on yourself because you can’t get wasted at the bar with your friends anymore. You don’t want to fall down that rabbit hole. But it’s comforting to know that you don’t have figure it out on your own. There are people out there who can help. It’s hard to fill that time, especially when dealing with alcohol cravings and triggers.

It helps to normalize alcohol-free choices and breaks down outdated stigmas. Remember, there’s incredible strength in community and connection; you’re definitely not alone in this. Every person who chooses a different path contributes to a drunk and bored broader shift where well-being and genuine fun take center stage.

I could go back and re-read what I wrote and approach it from the perspective of an outside observer. But I didn’t know what to do with them besides feel them. And the more I felt them, the more intense and blinding they would get. I over-identified with every negative feeling in my body.

Another woman on my call said that she had found during quarantine a local farm that did vegetable deliveries and also the freshest eggs she’s ever seen. Seen, and buckets and buckets of local flowers that are lush and gorgeous and beautiful and a total treat. But she can afford it because she’s not drinking.
